There are more slaves today than were seized from Africa in four centuries of the trans-Atlantic slave trade. The modern commerce in humans rivals illegal drug trafficking in its global reach— and in the destruction of lives. National Geographic, Sept, 2003
These are debt slaves, lured from places where job prospects are bleak with promises of employment opportunity in another country, only to discover that they are being transported to a totally different location where they are raped, intimidated, forced into the sex trade, and repeatedly sold from one bar owner to another as soon as the cost of buying them as been repaid by their labor.
Then there’s addiction, or Chemical Slavery. The word is derived from the Latin “addictus”, which means ‘given over’, or ‘one awarded to another as a slave’. We own an integrative health clinic, and many of our clients are no stranger to Addiction. We once had a 3 year old as a client. Her mom was an addict, a chemical slave. The Mom sold this precious child to an ‘uncle’ in exchange for her drug of choice. In her world, she had to have that drug, or die. She was enslaved to drugs, so much so that she went against one of the strongest instincts in nature, that of a mother protecting her offspring, so that she could ‘give herself over’ to something outside of herself.
In the category of addiction, there are also addictions to food, sex, alcohol, other people, social networking, electronic devices, TV…..all of which are considered normal parts of being alive, unless you turn yourself over to it, become its slave. The more you focus on trying to control ‘it’, the more ‘it’ controls you.
What does Slavery have to do with The Great MKMMA Adventure?
When we allow power to be externally imposed upon us by anything or anyone, we are slaves not of our own choosing. Og Mandino describes this beautifully in Scroll One when he says “As a child, I was slave to my impulses; now I am slave to my habits, as are all grown men I have surrendered my free will to the years of accumulated habits and the past deeds of my life have already marked out a path which threatens to imprison my future………..the worst of these tyrants is habit. Therefore if I must be a slave to habit, let me be a slave to good habits.”
What a concept! We are able to CONSCIOUSLY choose ‘our masters’ such that we can access the infinite power that abides within each and every one of us. As we practice these new habits, and become their slaves, we free ourselves from the servitude and slaveries which the world continually attempts to impose upon us.
Could it be that liberty lives in the freedom of man to choose the habits to which he becomes enslaved? That sounds like authentic power to me. Let’s do it!
